This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibitions, “Drawn to Painting: Leon Kossoff Drawings and Prints After Nicolas Poussin,” Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 20 January – 2 April, 2000, which traveled to the National Galleryof Australia, Canberra, 17 March – 10 June, 2001; and “Poussin Landscapes by Kossoff,” J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, 18 January – 16 April, 2000. A related show, “After Nicolas Poussin: New Etchings by Leon Kossoff,” was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York, 24 April – 13 August, 2002.
Richard Kendall trained as a painter and printmaker before taking an MA in art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. As a lecturer at colleges and universities in Manchester, he developed an interest in Impressionism, and has published books on Cézanne, Degas, Monet and Van Gogh. He has also curated several major exhibitions of the work of Degas in Britain and the United States. He now works as an independent scholar and has written essays and reviews on the work of a number of contemporary artists, including Lucian Freud, Euan Uglow and Leon Kossoff. |

Patrick McCaughey has been the Directror of three major art museums: the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (1981-87); the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Conn (1988-96); The Yale Center for British Art, New Haven (1996-2001). He produced the first comprehensive monograph on Fred Williams in 1980, subsequently reprinted three times. In 2003 he published an Australian memoir, The Bright Shapes and the True Names (Text, Melbourne). He lives and works as a writer in New Haven, Connecticut.
